Folly (reunion) @ Maxwell's in Hoboken

Folly is an innovative band with a sick gift of mixing hardcore, punk, metal, and ska with some lighter parts  thrown into their music without sounding weird or awkward. Their opening song for "Discussion Is For The Pigs" blared loudly and the pit opened up and kids started hardcore dancing. It was the first time I was at a show at Maxwell's where kids were moshing this hard. I've seen a good Screaming Females show get wild, but nothing like the intensity of this show. I grew up on Folly in college because they were a staple at WSOU, the radio station I worked for in South Orange, NJ. I couldn't help but two-step, jump up and down, and sing along to the few songs I remembered. Though it had been three years since Folly called it a day, they came back in full force and sounded like they hadn't even had that much time away from playing music. They were clearly well practice and still so into what they were playing. I think they may have been better than the last few times I remember seeing them at Montclair State University and Bloomfield Ave Cafe. Singer Jon said that their bassist Arben is moving to Colorado, so they figured if they're going to do some shows they might as well do them now while everyone's still around. It was a good time. I got hit in the mouth and my glasses almost got destroyed but all was fine in the end. It was good to get out to a fun hardcore show and dance around and try to pile on top of people. Now they are set to play two dates at the School of Rock this weekend and two dates at the Stanhope House the following weekend. It's going to be sick.

Spotlight: Titus Andronicus

DOWNLOAD: Titus Andronicus- A More Perfect Union

Titus Andronicus is a New Jersey band that makes you think and no matter how big they get they still remember their roots. The Glen Rock band has garnered much attention and have played sold out shows but they still manage to get away with playing the same venues. Their brand of punk rock is both urgent and intelligent, thoughtful and passionate. The band's Shakespearean name and themed Civil War album, The Monitor are just two intriguing aspects of the band. At least two of the members (Patrick and Amy) live in Brooklyn, but so be it, they are still a Jersey band. The band's history is worth mention to show their progress. I think there's so much to learn from a band like this.

In August the band performs both at Glasslands and Maxwell's. The band performed a free show at Glasslands Gallery in 2009 with The So So Glos, now they come back to play for $15. The day after they'll be at Maxwell's. Earlier this year the band played a sold out show there. Finally, the band plays the 1, 000 capacity Webster Hall in September. I saw them open for Man Man in November 2008 there, now they are headlining. Truly amazing. They've played with Ted leo, Los Campesinos, The Breeders, No Age, Black Lips, and Lucero, among others.

Titus Andronicus plays Glasslands Gallery with Bad Credit No Credit, Bottle Up & Go on August 18th. Tickets available here. Then they're at Maxwells on August 19. Tickets are $12 in advance here, $14 at the door. Finally, the band wraps up their tour on Sept. 22nd at Webster Hall. Tickets are $16 in advance here.

Live Review: No Pasarans & The Night Marchers @ Maxwell's 7-18-10

No Pasarans @ Maxwells

For a band that hasn't played together for 10 months, No Pasarans sure had it together. The band keeps post-punk alive in New Jersey with their unrelenting brand of rock. the Jersey City/ Hoboken based band features Eric Mason, also a member of the folk/rock band Secret Country. Here he played bass and  guitar and chopped away comfortably. The band opened for John Reis from Rocket From the Crypt, Drive Like Jeju, Hot Snakes, newest band, The Night Marchers. The three guys play in the vein of Fugazi, Q and Not U, Wire, and mix 80's punk like Naked Raygun and Pegboy. "Mobility at Last," was one of favorites of the set. This band needs to play more shows. I can imagine a nice line-up with No Pasarans, Screaming Females, and Black Wine. Don Giovanni Records and Killing Horse Records bands fit perfectly together!

The Night Marchers, who played the much larger Siren Festival the day before, got the crowd moving with their brand of rock 'n roll. The steady guitar prompted some shaking and headbanging. But singer John said that his band's music isn't made for dancing or something life that.Their set was garage-rock at its finest.

The Acorn and Communipaw @ Maxwell's 7-13-10 (photos)

Acorn

The Acorn are surprising in a different way: rather than pull strings slowly from your heart, they tap them like fingers across a piano, making your feet then tap a steady beat against the filthy hardwood floor. The Canadian sweethearts are bright enough to make you smile to yourself in a crowd, and soulful enough to make you bite your lips, holding back the urge to sing along, even if you don’t know the words.

Communipaw

Communipaw is the kind of band that comes up on shuffle when you’re walking home after a long, shitty day at work. The sunlight’s fading on the west horizon, and night is crawling slow and violet up the sky. The music matches the ache in your calves--every crash of guitar feels like another stretch, longing to end up somewhere familiar. Their kind of folk is bittersweet--it draws things out of your memory that you’ve forgotten, or recalls the things that you desperately wanted to forget. When I saw the New Brunswick band at Maxwell’s on July 13th, I was caught off-guard. Bond’s voice is both melancholy and defiant, and their lyrics have heart, the kind that your tired head would be singing if your thoughts were set to music.

Both of these bands are great to see live, in their own different ways, but the one thing they have in common is the ability to influence the small beating bundle beneath your ribs.

Dan Reed to bring acoustic stylings to NJ, NYC (Maxwell's date + more)

Dan Reed has a following that grows with his history. Born in Portland, he moved to South Dakota, where a Japanese exchange student taught him a skill that would keep his heart beating through the years ahead. Dan and his guitar headed back to Portland, where his story (and his fan base) would only grow thicker.

You don’t simply listen to his music--you listen to his history. Dan once interviewed the Dalai Lama for SPIN Magazine, who is now his number one friend on MySpace. He wrote a screenplay, which he later acted in. He journeyed through India, and now he’s coming to our version of the East--New York and New Jersey. He’ll be playing at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ on July 25th, and The Bitter End in New York City on July 28th, and The Record Collector in Bordentown, NJ on July 30th.

Bern & The Brights: New EP out July 17th at Hoboken show + free song

We've spoken about Bern & The Brights here quite a few times. For good reason, the Montclair band is active in New Jersey and New York, and simply release some groovy, danceable songs that brighten you up. Pun intended. Bottom line is they have their shit together.

So I'm pleased to announce that the EP (cover art on left) the band's been prepping will be out this summer. Swing Shift Maises is the band's first studio recording in the band's two-year history, showcasing 5-songs from the violin-driven rock band. It will be released on July 17th at the band's CD Release show at Maxwell's. They perform at 8:30pm with Madison Ave. Boys, The Fave, and Anthony Walker and The Medicine Chest. $8. The band also have shows this summer in Jersey City, Union, Montclair, Newark, and Princeton.

We're excited to offer you a free download of the band's single "Sangria Peaches." You can download it using the following information:

Live Review: Annuals @ Maxwells 6-19-10 (photos)

Annuals @ Maxwells

Words by Zandra Ruiz
Photos by Davis Peer

Annuals are a band you never forget. I saw them for the first time at Maxwell’s in Hoboken on June 19th. Before they even started playing, I noticed the members drift through the growing crowd, and I wondered who they were. They were not visibly different from anyone else there, but they walked with presence, with a calm confidence, as if they knew, in ten short minutes, the stage would be theirs. The crowd would be theirs.
And we were.

Lead singer Adam Baker’s strident vocals are smooth the way you want your own voice to be smooth, loud the way you want to be loud. The urge to sing with him, to fill your lungs with air and belt his words until you’re breathless, is impossible to fight. You watch keyboardist Anna Spence lose herself in the music, caught in raptures of the red and gold light, and you want to melt with her into every key she plays. The beat, sometimes doubled or tripled, surges through your feet, bounces along your ribs, and it feels like your heart is out of control, taken right out of your chest, pumped through the air and thrown back at you.

Once you hear Annuals do indie-pop, you want every band to do indie-pop like them--you want every band to have as much vigor, as much energy and passion as they do.

They have just finished an eastern tour with What Laura Says, Thinks, and Feels and The Most Serene Republic, both captivating and entertaining live bands.

Live Review: Gold Motel @ Maxwells in Hoboken 5-6-10 w/ Family of the Year

 Gold Motel
Photos & words by Christine Wagenheim

The theme for the night must have been “energy,” because that is what the bands I saw at Maxwell's for the night gave. The first band up was Family of the Year, who had plenty of pep and kept me entertained. It was a great start for what would be a fun night. Next up was Gold Motel, a Chicago based band fronted by Greta Morgan of The Hush Sound. This show was the last of three dates in the NY/NJ area for them, but you wouldn't be able to tell based on the energetic show they gave their audience. They opened with "Summer House," a fun, clap-inducing number that even had me drop my camera long enough to clap along. Right off the bat they proved to be energetic and dancy. They played a bunch of songs off their new album, which sounds like it is worth a listen if this sample was any indication. They even broke out a tambourine for one or two numbers. Between that and the drummers intense beats, I got tired just watching them. They really put a lot of energy into their performance. They slowed it down a bit about midway through their set, as if they were taking a breath before diving back into the water. Their lively performance would build back up though, and a couple of songs later we would be back to dancing our hearts out. If you have never heard of this band before I suggest you fix that as soon as possible. They are a fun mix of dance and energy that will make you smile when you need it most. They ended with "Perfect In My Mind," and that is how I would describe the night.
