Montclair, NJ’s Those Mockingbirds will release a 12’’ EP of their latest effort Fa Sol La with the Newark, NJ based indie label Star Beat Music on Jan. 31, 2012.
Fa Sol La is the follow-up to the band’s 2010 debut EP No Symmetry. The EP highlights the band’s melodic rock edge while showing their progress. It starts off with a sparse instrumental that leads the way for the catchy “Coast to Coast,” the bittersweet “Don’t Stray,” the circus-esque “The Bloodiest Gums,” and the thought-provoking “We’re Animals.”
“[Fa Sol La] shows five people who are always trying to push forward with our sound,” guitarist Jon Gianino says. “We’re trying to keep things entertaining while enjoying ourselves. If we don’t like what we’re doing how can we expect anyone else to like what we’re doing?”
Guitarist Adam Bird has had his heart set on releasing Fa Sol La on vinyl since Spring 2011 when the band was in pre-production for these songs.
“Vinyl is romantic for lack of another word,” he says. “When music exists on vinyl, it’s more real than any other state. I’ve had Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on vinyl since I was 14-years-old. I want the whole experience. It’s a collector type thing. It’s the ultimate form because it’s more than just the music.”
“Coast to Coast,” “Don’t Stray,” and “We’re Animals” from Fa Sol La was recorded at The Wild Arctic (The Hold Steady, Nightmare of You) in Queens, NY with Shawn Kimon and Dean Baltulonis. “Mountain Slang I, Mountain Slang II, and “The Bloodiest Gums” was recorded at drummer Kevin Walters home studio, Sleeping In Sanity.
“Lyrically this EP is all about difficulties with people,” Bird says. “On the last EP I was talking generally and socially, but on this one I’m talking more about personal problems with people. Every line on this EP is something I’ve wanted to say to someone in the past year.”
The 12’’ will be pressed as a one-sided, limited edition of 300 vinyl records on color and black vinyl with a white screenprint on the b-side. All records will be hand numbered. You can listen to a stream for the album at the band’s official website and receive a free download of the EP, including a cover of “Break the Chain” by Fleetwood Mac.”
The band’s next show is this Fri., Nov. 4th at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ with Fairmont, The Multi-Purpose Solution and Theodore Grimm. The show starts at 8:30pm. Tickets are $8. www.maxwellsnj.com
